June is Alzheimer’s and Brain awareness month. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age (>65). Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease with no cure. However, therapy can assist in managing Alzheimer’s Disease.

Physical and Occupational Therapy can incorporate exercise into your daily routine to slow the progression and decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease. Just 30-60 min of exercise a day can increase the size of the brain associated with memory formation and allow your brain to perform at a higher level.

Speech therapy for an individual with Alzheimer’s will typically focus on maintaining language and cognitive skills. A Speech Language Pathologist can educate patients on strategies to help with word finding, following directions, and ways to assist with eating and swallowing food safely. The overall goal of therapy is to help the person be as independent as possible for as long as possible.
